EMISSIONS INSIGHTS BLOG
The concept of emissions management progressed from the realm of the environmentalist through society to the business board room. The progressive organizations are shifting away from traditional business to adopt sustainability.
Carbon Reduction Commitment Readiness
Please note: The content of this article is in the process of being updated to reflect the latest CRC scheme design. Updated content will be posted shortly. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) website contains complete details on program requirements and design.
Knowing if your organization is ready for the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) in 2010
If your organization is directly affected by the introduction of the Carbon Reduction Commitment, you don't want to be left in the dark and must make sure that, within the highest levels of your company, mandates are issued to force a collective compliance.
Failure to register or to be ready to comply when the scheme commences in 2010 will result in fines and considerable brand & reputation damage. The UK government has made it clear that it will publish details of noncompliance as well as poor performance.
You will be ready to engage in the body and spirit of the regulations if you adhere to the following timetable:
By May 2009
- Have analyzed 2008 electricity consumption and, if you use half hourly meters (HHM), have determined whether you used at least 6000 MwH during the year. In general, this benchmark signifies that you must participate.
- Have nominated a senior member of your organization to oversee your participation.
May 2009
- Have received introductory information on the scheme from the CRC administrator.
September 2009
- Have received qualification packs from the administrator to enable you to prepare for participation.
During the 2010 Financial Year
- Have monitored energy use for the year. This is the footprint year for the introductory phase, meaning that your level of participation will be decided based on emissions inventory for this period. During this year, you must also comply with emissions requirements.
Between April 2010 and September 2010
- Have registered for the scheme, or disclosed information to the registry if you have half hourly meters but have not reached the threshold.
April 2011
- Have purchased allowances to cover emissions that were recorded during the preceding financial year and for those that are projected for the forthcoming year.
- Have made sure that you have adequate funding available by this time!
Fundamentally, it should be noted as follows:
- 2008 is a review year to see whether you are affected by CRC.
- 2009 is the year to get ready and to prepare for registration.
- 2010 ( financial year) is the year to monitor your energy usage and calculate the basis of your actual footprint. This is also the registration year.
- 2011 ( financial year) is the full participation year - purchase and subsequently submit allowances according to your emissions requirements.
