Any organization now faces considerable challenges in terms of both legislation and potential reputational harm if it does not understand the principles of corporate sustainability and the need to take action. Not only is it no longer permissible to pollute, to use excess energy or to otherwise operate in an inefficient manner, the business must be seen to be proactive in terms of reducing its liabilities and becoming a better corporate citizen.
Ultimate responsibility for an organization's corporate sustainability lies at the very senior management level. These principles must be instilled within every member of the organization and must does not be seen as a public relations responsibility. Rather, every element of the enterprise's operations must be scrutinized to ensure that it is doing its bit toward the overall goal.
A recent presidential executive order gives us an idea of what each and every organization may in turn face in the future. The Obama directive ordered all government agencies and departments to fully embrace the concept of "corporate sustainability" and sets in place a timetable to measure their compliance.
Beware the organization that suddenly releases a corporate sustainability report. Without a thorough analysis and understanding of the initial position, it is very difficult to make any claims and even more important that the company does not project its ability to make reductions. The enterprise that is too hasty in this regard could be accused of "greenwashing."
Corporate Sustainability Will Be a Major Challenge
When it comes to energy production, use and associated liabilities, carbon emissions are referred to as within three scopes. Scopes one and two detail emissions as a consequence of energy production and subsequent usage and these areas must be fully explored and understood first. Scope three refers to supply-chain, transportation, disposal and other areas and must be analyzed in due course.
A full definition of an enterprise organization is known as a lifecycle analysis and is a required exercise before the company can embark on a program of corporate sustainability. Lifecycle analysis refers to a full understanding of every element of the operation with regard to energy use and resource usage.

A significant and positive byproduct of a corporate sustainability program is an enhanced understanding of the very cost of doing business in the first place. As each asset must be analyzed, its impact understood and its costs revealed, a better return on investment can be expected accordingly.
