What Is a Web Service
A Web Service is a software system designed to support interoperable machine-to-machine interaction over the internet. It has an interface described in a machine processable format like XML. External systems interact with the host web service prescribed by its interface typically conveyed using HTTPS with XML.
Business Perspective
Web services are an important concept for the business. Most Fortune 500 have adapted Web services to easily exchange data between Customers, Suppliers and other business partners.
For a Business, Web services is about reducing cost and integrating application functionality between business partners independent of application architecture or hosting infrastructure. Web Services is the key, allowing application systems and business processes to be efficiently integrated.
Technical Perspective
From a technical perspective, a web service is nothing more than a collection of one or more related operations accessible over the internet implemented using loosely coupled open HTTP/XML technologies. The Web services architecture is an interoperability architecture. Web services provide a standard means of inter-operating between different software applications, running on a variety of platforms or frameworks.
Web services refer to a set of programming standards used to make different types of software talk to each other over the Internet without human intervention.
Verisae Web services use two main components to exchange data.
- Extensible Markup Language (XML)
- Standard Internet Protocol (HTTPS)
