Time-Based Asset Cost Management
TIME-BASED ASSET COST SAVINGS
By Paul Hepperla, VP of Product Strategy
Today’s “lean manufacturing” processes were rooted in better maintenance practices of the 1950’s. Today, asset management, or the management of the Total Cost of Ownership of a device through its life, is more important now than it ever has been.
With the advent of information technology applied to this problem, the ability to generate savings and productivity while reducing waste is a reality. When applying the ability to get real time feedback on processes, systems and people, the cost reduction opportunities are exponentially greater.
Organizations are dealing with a myriad of complex business issues. The focus on cost reductions is becoming more intense. Certainly the current economic situation is driving this renewed focus.
The large majority of companies are looking at cost cutting to remain at profitability levels their shareholders expect. Many are looking at company-wide programs to increase performance.
Starting in the early 1950’s, a number of business processes took hold focusing on uptime improvements. From Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) came a focus on lean manufacturing and “zero error, zero work-related accident, and zero loss.” This came primarily through identification of waste, called Muda, and working systematically to improve them through improvements, called Kaizen.
Of Muda and Kaizen, Kaizen has been the talk of many business books over the last 50 years. However, a renewed focus on “Muda” will not only address asset management imperatives, but also lead to improvements in energy use and the corresponding positive results on environmental impact and sustainability.
How does an increased focus on “Muda” incorporating time-based results positively affect the outcome?
